We are always asked by our customers whether SharePoint On-Premises still makes sense or whether the future is completely in the cloud. Will Microsoft even complete the development of SharePoint on Premises?
Some chic features, such as Delve, are only planned for the Office 365 SharePoint Cloud solution. Also, since Satya’s appointment as CEO of Microsoft, the line with Mobile First – Cloud first has been clearly defined. These circumstances have probably led to voices that voiced that Microsoft SharePoint On-Premises is completely discontinued and is now only based on the cloud. Microsoft, however, rejects these rumors and promises long product life cycles and many other generations of SharePoint On-Premises.
They also have every reason for this because SharePoint On-Premises is a billion-dollar business, which many customers have invested in the past and invested accordingly. If Microsoft SharePoint were now set, that would be a strong sales and image loss. Not to mention the current revenue loss that Microsoft will have through the new license model of Windows 10. Another cash cow just to slaughter would be fatal.
From our point of view, SharePoint On-Premises will not disappear from the market in the short or medium term. Both SharePoint On-Premises and the Office 365 Cloud solutions offer advantages and disadvantages.
From entrepreneurship, there is a lot to consider for a SharePoint On-Premises solution. Especially when the data protection and the security of the data are always at the top. Even with very large amounts of data, there are often problems with the cloud. In addition, there are laws that must be complied with. For example, personal data, without consent, may not leave Germany. Fortunately, you do not have to choose one of the two solutions, but you can go the middle way. The middle way in this case is called Hybrid Cloud and it combines exactly the aspects that you need for your project.
To get the strategic decision, whether one is now on -premises, cloud or hybrid to be able to meet, one should recall the characteristics of the solutions.
On-Premises mean – in general – that the operation of software runs on its own hardware. For this, licenses are purchased and implemented on the so-called “on-site infrastructure”.
With SharePoint, this means that a project must also provide the appropriate infrastructure, such as servers and licenses. During ongoing operation it must then be supervised, constantly checked and updated. To do this, trained IT staff or a SharePoint service provider is required to set up and operate the SharePoint solution. In addition to the investment costs, costs also arise during ongoing operation, so as to avoid possible downtime. These can become expensive due to the loss of data and the limited workload of employees.
The advantage of this solution is clear that the complete environment, including all data, is at the company itself. The customization of the solution gives you all the freedom, as SharePoint On-Premises is fully individualizable.
With Office 365, however, not all custom apps can be used.
Integration of the SharePoint environment into an existing system landscape and the exchange of data between different systems are usually easier to implement.
With the On-Premises solution, your company retains the right to perform updates automatically. In the case of Microsoft’s cloud solutions, on the other hand, the IT giant decides when which updates are to be carried out. Unthinkable when an important feature suddenly no longer exists after the update or a bug in the update lapses the entire IT infrastructure.
With the Cloud one goes away from the own infrastructure. The IT performance is provided as a service over the Internet. The benefits of the cloud are that all data can be made available from anywhere. Cloud solutions are also more scalable and short-term provisioning is also possible.
Another advantage of the cloud solution is the cost factor. It is only paid for what is needed and the investment costs, which one has with the On-Premises-solution, also fall away. At SharePoint Online, Microsoft takes over the infrastructure and basic configuration, but also allows only a correspondingly limited, customer-specific adaptation of the service. However, costs for trained IT staff or a service provider are already included.
Hybrid Cloud Solutions with SharePoint
In the hybrid cloud, you can mix and flexibly combine elements from the cloud with elements from the on-premises solution.
This solution offers some freedom and can be perfectly matched to almost all possibilities.
Microsoft itself describes its hybrid solution as follows: “On the other hand, on-premise, hosting solutions and cloud services are no longer mutually exclusive. Microsoft offers flexible mixed models, so-called hybrid cloud solutions, which combine the advantages of all models and are tailored to the needs of the enterprise. “
From the comments of Microsoft employees it can be understood that the future will also be for Microsoft in hybrid environments, at least in the medium term. Microsoft has learned that it is just too early for a cloud environment for most businesses.
The ability to store the metadata of On-Premises files in the cloud can be indexed and output. In the future, the search results will be combined with data from e-mails, Skype, files, Yammer and OnDrive combined with local information.
